Come the second quarter of 2021, Mahindra will launch what is sure to be its most exciting new vehicle of the year: its new Thar. The SUV does not look too different from its predecessor's tried-and-tested formula, but it sure looks more modern and contemporary than ever before.

Gone is the upright design of the current model, and in is a visual package that will speak to a bigger audience. But the SUV offers more than just a visually pleasing design - it also promises to a better 4x4 vehicle.

Improved 4x4

Mahindra will offer its new Thar with two engines: a petrol and a diesel, both turbocharged in keeping with the excitement factor. The 2.0-litre petrol motor provides 112kW and 320Nm, while the 2.2-litre diesel produces 97kW and 320Nm. In addition, the Thar will feature a rear diff-lock and a Shift-on-the-fly 4x4 transfer case. For improved off-road abilities, the SUV also features low range.

Mahindra also ensured that the Thar can wade water up to 650mm deep, has 226mm ground clearance, and vastly improved approach, departure, and ramp over angles (41.8, 36.8, and 27-degrees).

The updated model will, in theory, offer stellar off-road capabilities that should appease potential buyers.

Why it's an exciting offering

Considering the Thar's position in the South African market, it is one of the vehicles in the market with a truly timeless design. The reason: function must follow form. In this regard, Mahindra knows that the buyer who opts for the Thar know what they want and what they're looking for.

The off-road capabilities will indeed challenge the Thar's biggest rival, the Suzuki Jimny, but the Indian SUV has another trick up its sleeve. The SUV's roof is available with three roof options: a hardtop, a foxed soft top, or a roof that can be manually removed. The removable option has never been a part of the Thar's offering and should give the SUV a new sense of adventure.

The Thar's pricing and specification will be announced closer to its local launch.
