VWSA launched the limited edition model in September 2020, and it currently holds a starting price tag from R247 700. The Mswenko is based on the Comfortline trim that uses a 1.4-litre engine that makes 63kW and 132Nm, mated to a five-speed manual transmission.
The German brand is swimming in the riches that the popular hatchback has afforded them locally and with the Mswenko being Tyrone's model of choice, only strengthens its reputation.
Here's what SA's resident 'RadioGuy' had to say about what makes his recently purchased Volkswagen Polo Vivo Mswenko so unique:
Wheels24: What was the motivation behind choosing the picking the Mswenko as your ride of choice?
Tyrone Paulsen: With the changes happening with how we work, live, and play, I needed to make some hard financial choices and seeing we already have a Tiguan AllSpace, we needed an easier to run, cheapish 'runaround' for to-and- from the shops, school runs etc.
"It was quite a long search to find something that would come in either below or equal to my monthly budget. It would be fuel-efficient and have the minimum spec, like aircon, electric windows and the ability to use Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, service plan etc.
"As a sidenote, there is a misconception that buying pre-owned is always better, however buying new has its advantages, like special offers which include discounts on pricing, interest rates, service, maintenance and warranty plans. Volkswagen Barons N1 City offered me an awesome deal and met all my requirements, and the model had an incredible record itself.
W24: How long have you had it now?
TP: I officially now have it three months and it hasn't even racked up close to 2 000km's on the clock. Working from home does have its advantages.
W24: Is there a specific stand-out feature you like?
TP: The unique black roof (both black inside and outside), the matching mirrors and matte grey wheels sets it apart from others, and then there's the interior.
W24: Are there any plans to do a bit of customising? Fitting a set of aftermarket wheels or drop in suspension?
TP: Being a petrolhead at heart, I would love to, but I will keep it as standard as possible for now. It's unique as is and we don't see many Mswenko models on the road.
W24: Do you plan on keeping it for long, or is there another model that perhaps tickles your fancy?
TP: The intention is to keep it for as long as possible, but who knows what happens with the current financial climate. Seeing as though I love cars, there is always something else tickling my fancy. With that said, the top of my list has to be a Golf 8 R.
