• The Audi RS6 takes on the Mercedes-AMG A45 S in a drag race.

• The RS6 is a performance wagon with 441kW and 800Nm.

• The A45 S is powered by the world's most powerful two-litre turbocharged engine and has 310kW and 500Nm.

The two cars featuring in today's drag race are not rivals in the real world, nor on paper. The facelifted Audi RS6 is due in South Africa soon, and although styling is subjective, I think it looks pretty damn good.

While the RS6 may be about practicality, space and is arguably the quintessential family car, the Mercedes-AMG A45 S is almost the complete opposite.

It's a small hatchback with massive sports seats, a huge rear wing, and four exhaust pipes to show its intent. So, why have Carwow lined these two performance cars up in a drag race? Well, host Mat Watson is changing from his daily driver (A45 S) to the new Audi RS6. What a lucky bugger!

But he can't conduct the drag race by himself, so he lovingly asked his girlfriend to get behind the flat-bottomed wheel of the RS6 to see which is quickest. But first, let's have a look at the cars.

Audi RS6 -

There's something naughty about a car that looks like it should for be pottering about town, carting children to school and loading a bunch of weekend goodies, powered by an angry-sounding V8 turbo engine.

The big news of course is the new engine system, which is a VW-Group derived 4.0-litre V8 twin-turbo engine in combination with a 48-volt main electrical system to produce a maximum of 441kW and 800Nm. An eight-speed automatic transmission is used, and of course Audi's four-wheel drive system is in place.

Zero to 100km/h is a claimed 3.6 seconds while 200km/h will take 12 seconds and the car is governed to a top speed of 250km/h.

The Audi weighs 2075 kilograms which gives it a significant disadvantage in comparison to the much smaller and lighter Mercedes-Benz.

Mercedes-AMG A45 S -

Right now this is the king of the hyper hatch kingdom. The second generation Mercedes-AMG A45 S brings a bazooka to a knife fight.

The latest M139 2.0-litre turbocharged, four-cylinder engine in the A45 S is the world's most powerful with 310kW and 500Nm. Power is up by 30kW and torque has increased by 25Nm.

The A45 S pushes out more power than any Audi or BMW in the compact performance car segment and are capable of reaching 100km/h in just 3.9 seconds (that's not a typo).  It weighs 1635 kilograms and uses a eight-speed dual clutch gearbox to send power to all four wheels.

Carwow says: "It's time for Mat's current daily driver to go head-to-head with his next daily driver - Mercedes-AMG A45 S vs Audi RS6!

Think it sounds unfair? Well, you'd be right - clearly the Audi RS6 is the more powerful car, with its 4-litre twin-turbo V8 putting down an enormous 441kW and 800Nm! Yeah it might be around 400kg heavier, but when you consider the AMG A45 S has a two-litre 4 cylinder turbocharged engine that can produce 'only' 310kW and 500Nm, does it really stand a chance?
