We'd make a bet and reckon once in your life either of these three cars occupied a spot in your dream garage.

We were talking about the period when German muscle cars sported V8 engines that sounded like erupting volcanoes.

The guys at CarWow lined up a B8 Audi RS4, the only V8-powered M3 and last but not least a W204 Mercedes-Benz C63 to compete in a drag race.

Normally-aspirated V8 engines power all three, the RS4 employs a 4.2-litre with 331kW and 430Nm to all four wheels via the seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox and weighs 1795kg.

The BMW's S65 4.0-litre produced 309kW and 400Nm with power directed to the rear wheels only via a seven-speed M-DCT gearbox. It revved to a dizzying 8300r/min and received positive reviews from the world's motoring press.

Last but not least is the C63 which has the largest displacement of the trio with an M156 6.2-litre V8 engine with a 336kW and a massive 600Nm directed towards the rear wheels via a seven-speed torque converter gearbox.

Jeremy Clarkson once described this trio as sublime, civilised and insane. We'll let you decipher which adjective fits with each car. Still, in their own right, they brought something to the car world that their successors don't do anymore: pure, unadulterated,normally-aspirated power!

Carwow says: "It's time for an old school, naturally-aspirated drag race! We've got Mat sat in the B8 Audi RS4, and he's lining up alongside a W204 AMG C63 and a BMW M3 E90!"
