Just about every action movie involves a high-octane car chase involving some precision driving and featuring 'have to see to believe' stunts. The reality is that many of these stunts behind the wheel are carried out by professionals, with the actors usually taking a backseat when it comes to doing the high-speed driving scenes to ensure their health and safety.

Actors tend to have an extensive car collection of vehicles, but that is where it usually stops. However, some actors carry their passion for cars to their personal life to soak in the thrill of it all with no cameras and scripts involved.

Do you know of any other actors or actresses that do racing outside of acting? Please email us or share your thoughts in the comments section below.

Jay Leno has one of the most extensive collections of cars and bikes, with more than 200 examples on show. Others like Jerry Seinfeld and Floyd Mayweather aren't too far behind.

Jackie Chan, Angelina Jolie and Jason Statham are just some of the actors and actresses known for doing their stunts, even if it means getting bruised up in the process.

Below are some of Hollywood's most-accomplished actors that have also plied their trade behind the wheel of a race car:

1. Matt LeBlanc

Most people know him for his role as Joey on the 1994 TV series Friends, but where motoring is concerned, he used to be one of Top Gear hosts.

He started racing motorbikes at the tender age of just 8-years-old and, to this day, holds the fastest lap record around the Top Gear track. Who said 'Joey' was just a pretty face.

2. Gene Hackman

The 'huh, what?' of this list is an actor that has been in Hollywood for what seems like forever. Yes, age might have caught up with him, but Gene Hackman once used to be a racer.

The now 90-year-old actor once raced Formula Ford's in the 1970s and took part in the 24 Hours of Daytona back in 1983.

3. Paul Walker

The late actor, most notable for his role as Brian O'Connor in the Fast and the Furious movie franchise, was also a massive petrolhead when not doing his thing on-screen.

Walker participated in the Redline Time Attack racing series, where he piloted a Street Tyre Class BMW E92 M3 for the AE performance Motorsport team. He also raced a Ford Boss Mustang at the Pirelli World Challenge Series.

4. Eric Bana

He once played The Hulk in the 2003 film, but besides having the crazed green behemoth's blood running through his veins, he is also an avid petrolhead at heart.

The Australian actor has taken part in numerous race events like Bathhurst 12 Hour, Australian GT Championship and the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge. He raced 38 times in total with two podium finishes.

5. Patrick Dempsey

The most established actor slash racer on the list comes in the form of 'McDreamy' from the famous Grey's Anatomy TV series. His crowning achievement is finishing in second place at the 24 Hours of Le Mans 5 years ago, with his Dempsey-Proton racing team.

He has also taken part in prestigious race events like the Rolex Sports Car Series, Porsche Supercup and the World Endurance Championship. Not bad for a 'doctor'.
