Simon's Town, outside Cape Town, is well known for being home to the South African Navy's naval base. Scenic drives to the sleepy little seaside town are always idyllic.
While there are several great fish and chips spots in Kalk Bay and fantastic ice cream joints dotted along the way, there's only one reason we frequent the picturesque place – and that's to visit the Simon's Town Warrior Toy Museum and Collectors' Shop, owned by Percy van Zyl.
The shop looks nothing like the absolute treasure awaiting you inside, and perhaps that's a good thing. The pale yellow walls and white pillars are faded outside. Two large old trees stand guard on either side in front on the pavement with neat shrubs and plants leading the pathway to the double wooden doors, which give no hint that there's a little piece of car-heaven beyond the white security gate.
