If you ever paid the Garden Route a visit, chances are that you know every town and village by name. But did you know that there is a 'hidden' gem of a road that runs between George and Knysna?
If you're starting in George, drive out of the city centre via the N12 and take a left into Madiba Drive. Road users are soon greeted with a sign that you are now driving on the Seven Passes Road, darting between luscious green trees and farms. Several small towns can be found along the road, including Karatara and Rheenendal - each with their own character and unique nature.
But the real magic of the road is the passes that make up the Seven Passes. These consist of Kaaimans River Pass, Silver River Pass, Touw River Pass, Hoogekraal Pass, Karatara Pass, Homtini Pass, and Phantom Pass. The road eventually exits near Knysna on the N2.
Walking with Big Foot
'Off the Beaten Track' founder, Gershwin Williams, recently traversed the Seven Passes. Not only did he and his wife make the most of the scenery the Seven Passes dishes up, but they also explored one of the wonders the Knysna area is known for: elephants.
According to Williams, the Knysna Elephant Park was a definite highlight of their trip. On their visit, they were one of a few people at the facility at the time. It allowed them to walk with elephants, interact with these giants, and to understand them just a little better.
On their way back to Cape Town, the duo also stopped at the Kaaimans River, near George, where they kayaked deep into the surrounding forest. This part of the road trip allowed them to see the forest from a different angle and widen their experiences of the area.
Knysna, and the greater Garden Route, is not just another holiday destination, but a fun-filled endpoint that offers near-endless activities.
