2021 Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport (NewsPress)

• New Golf 8 GTI Clubsport performs launch control.

• Volkswagen's latest Golf GTI will arrive in South Africa later this year.

• Volkswagen confirmed it wouldn't introduce the Clubsport model locally as it's only available for European emissions levels.

Earlier this year we mentioned that the latest Golf GTI is the most-anticipated new car of 2021. The Volkswagen hatchback has a cult following, and the newest model 'lives rent-free' in many minds.

Last year, Volkswagen South Africa wet Golf lovers appetites by introducing the limited edition GTI TCR. Only 300 units were shipped over.

And while South Africans wait for the GTI to launch later this year, in Europe, the flagship GTI Clubsport is on sale.

The team at Automann-TV have put together a neat video of the GTI Clubsport completing a launch control start and testing its acceleration time from 100km/h to 200km/h. It makes for exciting viewing. The Clubsport emits a lovely snarling noise from its twin exhausts.

For the record, the Clubsport makes do with 221kW and 400Nm from the EA888 2.0-litre turbocharged motor. The power is sent to the front wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox.

Automann-TV's says the Clubsport is fitted with 19-inch winter tyres and the test is done in cold conditions. The publication recorded a remarkable 0-100km/h sprint time of 5.7 seconds and in-gear acceleration between 100km/h and 200km/h of 11.5 seconds.

The times are impressive when one considers the terrain upon which the test is done. The Clubsport pulls cleanly off the line. In press material, Volkswagen said that the Clubsport would reach 100km/h from standstill in "under six seconds."

The flagship GTI weighs 1461kg and features a front locking differential and upgrades over the normal GTI for a more focused track-ready car.

The Clubsport will not be sold in South Africa due to our low-quality fuel that isn't on par with European standards. Locals will have to wait for the GTI and R models for the performance hatch in its eighth-generation guise.

Watch the video below to see the new Clubsport perform launch control and its in-gear acceleration from 100km/h to 200km/h.
