Clifton stamp their form on tournament

CLIFTON were once again the winners of the annual Champions Waterpolo Tournament, which they hosted in Durban.

Clifton and the 15 invited teams from around the country played over three days in some highly competitive games.

The 16 teams were divided into four pools of four schools each, and once the pool stages were complete the winners and runners-up in each pool contested the quarter-finals and went on to the finals. All sides then played for a position amongst the 16 teams.

Clifton are undoubtedly the top waterpolo school in the province and after winning this tournament, perhaps the best in the country.

With five SA Schools players in their ranks they won all their games.

Winners Clifton and runners-up Jeppe both went forward to the quarters from Pool A.

St Johns from Johannesburg were the winners in Pool B, with Bishops the runners-up. The Pool C winners were Hilton with St Stithians close runners-up, and in Pool D, Reddam from Cape Town won ahead of Kearsney.

The quarter-final results saw Clifton beating St Stithians 5-4, St Johns winning 7-4 against Kearsney, Jeppe beating Hilton 6-3 and Reddam winning 5-1 against Bishops.

The four losers then played in the plate semi-final with St Stithians and Hilton winning 9-5 and 8-6 against Kearsney and Bishops respectively.

In the Cup semi-final, Clifton beat St Johns 9-5 and Reddam beat Jeppe 8-5.

On Sunday, the final day, all sides played for positions from one to 16.

Clifton were again the winner beating Reddam 4-2.

The two losing semi-finalists, Jeppe and St Johns played for positions three and four. In a high scoring game St Johns won 10-8.

St Stithians won the plate final and position five when they narrowly beat Hilton 5-4.

Bishops and Kearsney shared seventh position drawing the game six all.

Affies were placed ninth beating Wynberg 6-5. For 11/12 position, Westville shaded St Albans 5-4.

Parktown were 13th beating St Peters from Johannesburg 6-3. DHS then took 15th place out of the 16 schools by winning 5-3 against St Davids.
