Embattled Durban businessman, Thoshan Panday, has applied for a relaxation of his bail conditions.

Panday and eight other people, including his family, are charged with a combined 261 counts of fraud and corruption among others relating to police accommodation tenders worth in excess of R47 million during the 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup.

On Tuesday, the matter was brought to court for pre-trial matters.

Sindisiwe Seboka, investigative directorate spokesperson, confirmed that Panday applied for a relaxation of his bail conditions.

“That matter will be heard through a separate judge on a date still to be determined. The state will bring a counter application for the cancellation of his bail,” she said.

Seboka said the defence lawyers requested documents from the state.

The case was postponed to May 4, 2022 for the state to respond.

According to court papers, Panday’s family members allegedly opened new companies in 2009 in anticipation of the tenders.

The money those companies received from the 2010 tenders, was allegedly rerouted back to Panday, the state prosecution alleges.

Former policemen, Navin Madhoe and Ashwin Narainpersad are accused of abusing their positions to award tenders to Panday’s companies and receiving kickbacks.
