A Westgate woman was killed and her friend critically injured when an unknown gunman fired multiple shots at them in Pietermaritzburg, KZN, on Thursday afternoon.

Delisile Mjoli (36) died from two gunshot wounds in the head while her friend Nosipho Mchunu (32) is in a critical condition at the hospital from one gunshot wound also in the head.

Pietermaritzburg police spokesperson Captain Kholeka Mhlongo said the two women were at their fast food container shop when they were attacked.

One of the two men involved walked in and placed an order for fried potato chips.

“They served him the chips and when they thought he was taking out money from his pocket, he pulled out a gun and fired multiple shots at them,” said Mhlongo.

The pair then fled on foot.

A case of murder and attempted murder is under investigation by Alexandra Road SAPS.

Mchunu’s brother, Lazarus Mchunu, said there had been a number of shootings in the Westgate area since December.

“Three people have died on the very same road and we are not sure what will happen to my sister since she’s in a critical condition from a gunshot wound in her head,” said Lazarus.

He said Mchunu started selling fast food at the container opposite their house four months ago.

“Had the police arrived fast and searched the area, they would’ve caught these guys,” said Lazarus.

A witness, who asked not to be named, said she saw the assailant firing multiple shots at the shop.

She said the second man, who was standing outside the shop, asked if the gunman was done before they both walked down the road with their fried chips.

She said they did not know the reason behind the shooting and were still shocked at what had happened.

The Mjoli family said they were unable to talk to the media as they were still trying to make sense of the news of her death.

“We don’t know who could’ve done something like this to her. All we know is that she was with her friend at the shop,” said the family.

Residents at the scene also expressed shock.
