The search for a 20-year-old Johannesburg man who was caught in rip currents at Kidds Beach, Port Edward on the Ugu South Coast on Monday, continues.

According to Gert du Plessis, National Sea Rescue Institute’s (NSRI) Port Edward station commander, the man was swimming with a 19-year-old boy and they were both caught in rip currents.

He said when the NSRI Port Edward duty crew arrived at Kidds Beach, they found the teenager safely out of the water suffering non-fatal drowning symptoms.

He added that the SAPS Search and Rescue are still searching for the 20-year-old.

“NSRI rescue swimmers responded directly to the scene following eye-witness reports of a drowning in progress. A search commenced and it appeared that while the two were swimming, they were caught in rip currents,” he said.

He added that the teenager attempted to assist his friend who then disappeared under water. The 19-year-old was able to get free of the currents and came ashore.

Bystanders also entered the water to search for the missing man, said du Plessis.

He added that they launched their Jet-Rib accompanied by a police search and rescue diver. The teenager was transported to hospital and has recovered.

Despite an extensive sea and shoreline search, said du Plessis, there remains no sign of the missing man.

“Police are continuing in the search. Our thoughts are with the family of the missing man in this difficult time,” said du Plessis.
