Three traffic officers and three driving school instructors who were arrested following a police investigation into a learner licence scam in Richmond, appeared in the magistrates court in Richmond yesterday.
Four of the group were released on R1 000 bail, while bail was not yet set for the remaining two suspects. The state has not opposed bail.
The accused appeared in three separate cases, which were adjourned to various dates.
The accused traffic police are Sandesh Dix (23), who was a star graduate of the Road Traffic Inspectorate College in 2005, Wiseman Vunuyise Ngcamu (28) and Sithembile Portia Mtungwa (25). The driving instructors are Sibusiso Joseph Ngcobo (28), Zimisele Goodenough Jeza (25) and Tervan Pillay (34).
It is alleged that the accused collaborated in collecting bribes from candidates for learner’s licences at the Richmond Municipality licensing department. In return, candidates would be provided with answers during learner’s licence tests.
Police started to investigate the scam six months ago.
On Friday, the traffic officials were arrested while in their offices and the instructors arrested on the traffic department premises.
