Water: premier on new dams for KZN

AMONG the challenges facing water provision in KwaZulu-Natal are the lack of rain, mismanagement of water resources and unaffordable water tariffs. These were the issues listed by Provincial Premier Dr Zweli Mkhize while opening the water and sanitation summit at the ICC in Durban yesterday.

Mkhize said climate change is also a factor that reduces the availability of fresh watery.

He said plans for water provision in KZN include the development of the Spring Grove Dam in Mooi River, which would increase water provision to the uMgungundlovu district.

He said a feasibility study to develop the Smithfield Dam in the Umkomaas River would also be undertaken.
