Rene van Rooyen’s Toorbos has been chosen to represent SA in the best international feature film award category at the 2021 Academy Awards.

Starring Elani Dekker and Stiaan Smith, her film explores the uprooting of Karoliena Kappa, a young forest woman, from her home in the Knysna Forest, in the 1930s.

Karoliena is coaxed into marriage with a townsman, experiences the realities of progress, discovers the oppression of society, the growing power of money on cultural homogenisation and what it takes to stay true to herself.
