Pietermaritzburg - An American citizen was killed when her vehicle overturned on the R74 near Bergville on Tuesday afternoon.
ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said on Tuesday that two people were killed and two others were seriously injured in the accident.
Vermaak said all four occupants of the vehicle appeared to have been ejected during the crash.
“One of the occupants sustained fatal injuries and was declared dead on the scene.
“Another occupant was found in a critical condition. While paramedics were treating her, her vital signs deteriorated and despite the efforts of the paramedics they could not revive her.”
The other two patients were seriously injured and stabilised before being taken to Ladysmith Provincial Hospital for further treatment.
“It is understood that they were travelling from Lesotho when the incident occurred, however, the exact cause of the incident is not yet known.”
U.S. Embassy spokesperson Cynthia Harvey said yesterday that they could confirm the death of an American citizen in South Africa.
“We are assisting, in line with the family’s wishes, with making arrangements to transport the body back to the United States,” said Harvey.
“We are aware that another American citizen was injured and we are providing appropriate consular services.
“Due to privacy considerations, we have no further information at this time,” she said.
This follows the death of a Dutch tourist who died in a car accident in the Kamberg last week.
Loek Pijnappel had been touring the country with a group of tourists when the vehicle he was in rolled.
