Police are concerned about the rise of criminality in the Durban township of Umlazi after five people were shot and killed on Tuesday night.

This incident comes on the back of six people being shot dead in the Zamani informal settlement in Umlazi on Saturday.

According to a statement released by the department of Transport, Safety and Liaison, three unknown gunmen opened fire at a group of people inside a house.

Five people died and three suffered serious injuries and were taken for treatment to a nearby hospital.

The statement said 37 9mm cartridges, two spent bullets and a live round of ammunition were found at the crime scene.

Peggy Nkonyeni, MEC for Transport, Safety and Liaison said she was concerned about the rise of killings in the area which has resulted in 11 deaths in under a week.

“I want to express my concern regarding the recent brutal killings that have happened at Umlazi. What worries me the most is that the majority of people who are involved are very young. I can’t even start to imagine how their families are receiving the sad news. I send my deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and assure the community that the police are looking into these sporadic crimes,” she said.
