Beaches in the north of Durban remain closed.
Beaches in the north of Durban remain closed.

Tourism on the KZN North Coast has taken another knock after chemical contamination forced the closure of beaches from the Umgeni River Mouth to Ballito.

The chemical spill was caused by a fire at the UPL chemical warehouse in Cornubia, which was torched during the unrest in July.

Since then, several North Coast beaches which are tourist attractions, including Thompson’s Bay and Salmon Bay in Ballito, have been closed for swimming purposes.
