Dysfunctional police vans, a shortage of manpower and years of underfunding is how police in Umlazi have been losing the gang war in the township.

This was according to Police Minister Bheki Cele, who visited the Durban area on Thursday following two mass shootings in three days that left 11 people dead and three seriously injured.

Cele was at the Umlazi Police Station to be briefed by local and provincial law enforcement entities about the latest developments in the cases.
