A police officer was rushed to hospital after being shot in the head during a shootout in a New Germany parking lot on Tuesday evening.

Andreas Mathios, Blue Security’s spokesperson, said their armed-response officers had rushed to the supermarket parking lot after receiving a panic activation and was informed of the shooting. Pinetown police were already at the scene.

Mathios said sources said the police officer had been shot in the head by an unknown suspect during a shootout in the parking lot.

“The victim was in SAPS uniform and driving his personal vehicle at the time of the incident, but it is unclear whether he was on duty. He was transported to hospital by a friend,” he said.

“Six bullet casings were recovered at the crime scene but the reason for the shooting remains unclear. Although there were numerous bystanders present, they were allegedly reluctant to relate what they had witnessed,” said Mathios
