A security guard is in critical condition after being shot during a jewellery store robbery at the Gateway Shopping Centre in Umhlanga, North of Durban.

According to Shawn Herbst, Netcare 911 spokesperson, the robbery occurred at around 2 pm on Wednesday afternoon.

“Reports indicate that an adult male security guard had been shot in the abdomen after trying to intervene in an armed robbery at a jewellery store,” said Herbst.

“According to witnesses the store was ambushed by approximately 10-15 suspects, all armed,” he said.

Herbst said the guard was treated on scene by paramedics before being rushed to a nearby hospital.

Robbers are said to have made off with an unknown amount of jewellery.

In leaked CCTV footage, the masked men are seen loading jewellery into a large bag while pointing guns at staff.

Police are on the scene and are investigating.

This is the second robbery at Gateway this year.

On June 21, a group of armed men held up customers and security guard before robbing the Narandas jewellery store.
