A Durban teenager has died after being electrocuted while train surfing.

KwaZulu-Natal police  spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele said earlier on Saturday, police members from Durban SAPS Search and Rescue along with Metro Police SAR and eThekweni Fire and Rescue were called out to Effingham Railway Station.

"A 17-year-old male, Sabelo Nxumalo, was train surfing on the roof when he was electrocuted.

"The train was traveling from Duffs road to Durban when the train conductor noticed the victim and alerted the train driver to stop."

Mbele said the teen's body was recovered and handed over to members from Kwamashu Railway SAPS.

She said an inquest docket has been opened.
