The last inspection at the Xinhua Distribution Centre in Durban found that the building, which recently burnt down, did not comply with fire safety measures.
This was revealed by eThekwini Municipality spokesperson, Lindiwe Khuzwayo, who was responding to questions by The Witness.
“We conducted our last inspection in October 2021 and found some non-compliance related to fire safety. Those finding were brought to the attention of [the centre’s] management and they were instructed to comply. The non-compliance found did no warrant an immediate closure of the mall.”
