Portuguese fugitive Joao Manuel de Oliveira Rendeiro (69) has since died while awaiting trial at the Durban Westville Correctional Centre on Friday morning.

Rendeiro, a convicted fraudster wanted by the Potuguese Government was arrested in Umhlanga Rocks, north of Durban, KwaZulu-Natal in December.

He was absconded from Portugal after being convicted on a multi-million dollar fraud case and sentenced to 12 years imprisonment before he escaped.
