Two people were shot dead and two were injured, including a police officer, during a shoot-out in Phoenix, Durban, on Thursday.
According to Grace Langa, Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) spokesperson, the incident took place around 1 am on Northern Drive.
“(Police) members spotted a suspicious vehicle and activated blue lights and sirens to stop the vehicle. The driver refused to stop. Police drove to the side of him shouting for him to stop and he still failed,” said Langa.
He added that the car eventually stopped and when a police officer approached it, the occupants fired shots at him injuring him on his leg.
“The other police officers who were with their colleague then retaliated by shooting at the suspects. Two suspects died on the scene and one was taken to hospital,” she said.
Two firearms were recovered from the scene.
IPID is investigating a case of death as a result of police action.
