Francois Hugo was found dead and with his hands tied behind his back on Thursday in his home.

Neighbour and friend Derryn Coetzer said the death of former University of KwaZulu-Natal professor and artist Francois Hugo (82) had a devastating impact on him and his family, as well as the local community.

Hugo was found dead in his Hilton home with his hands tied behind his back and his dog by his side on Thursday.

Coetzer said they had not known Hugo for a long time, having only moved into the house next door a few years ago, but in that time Hugo had left a lasting impression on them.
