The ANC on Monday scored a major victory following the Electoral Commission’s (IEC) announcement to reopen the registration of councillor candidates ahead of the local government elections.

The ANC had not been able to register several of its candidates within the deadline previously set by the IEC, which recently lost a Constitutional Court bid to have the November local government polls postponed.

Briefing the media yesterday, IEC chairperson, Glen Mashinini, said given that the electoral body has resolved that the voter registration weekend should be on September 18 and 19, it made sense to re-open the councillor candidate registration process.
