A six-year-old boy drowned at La Mercy Lagoon on the KZN North Coast on Monday afternoon.

NPO, Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), together with Netcare 911 and other emergency services were called out in response to the report of the incident.

CERT said they arrived to find a bystander conducting CPR on the boy on the sand.

Nazir Sadack of CERT said despite attempts to rescuscitate the child, he was declared dead at the scene by Netcare. It appeared he could have been in the water for a while before he was found.

Tongaat police spokesperson, Captain Patrick Ngwane said an inquest docket has been opened.

Earlier this year, a man, his son and a family pet also drowned at a beach in La Mercy. Family members said they had been walking the dogs along the shore when a current dragged them into the water.
