The family of a KZN teenager who went missing last week have called on the police to deploy additional rescue divers.

Vela Msomi (14) was swept out to sea in currents while swimming with a friend at Jabula Beach in St Lucia, northern KwaZulu-Natal, on October 11.

The Grade 9 pupil from Vikingozi High School in KwaMakhutha, south of Durban, was visiting his father in Mtubatuba when the incident happened.

His father, Bhekinkosi Fakude, said the past seven days have been difficult for the family.

“We believe that my son’s body is still trapped in the bowels of the sea. There should be more divers who will come and probably spend the whole day searching in the sea.”

“We wake up as early as 6 am in the morning to look for his body along the sea shoreline. We have been doing this for the past seven days with no luck. But we will not despair until the body is recovered,” he said on Tuesday.

The devastated family has appealed to the SAPS search and rescue to deploy more rescue divers to the St Lucia beach.

“We believe that my son’s body is still trapped in the bowels of the sea. There should be more divers who will come and probably spend the whole day searching in the sea.

“A team of iSimangaliso Wetland Park rangers have joined us in the search along the sea shoreline. Despite all the numerous efforts made from last week, the body has not been recovered,” Fakude said.

Spokesperson for National Sea Rescue Institute Craig Lambinon said police search and rescue teams were conducting an ongoing search.
