The Hawks are searching for gang members behind a cash-in-transit heist that took place in northern KwaZulu-Natal on Monday.

The Hawks said a group of men opened fire on a vehicle on the R34 on Monday, bringing it to a halt.

Simphiwe Mhlongo, Hawks spokesperson, said the security van had been transporting cash from Ulundi to Richards Bay.

He said they used explosives to blow the vault and made off with an undisclosed amount of cash.

During the robbery, Mhlongo said the gang also fled the scene with one firearm belonging to the security guards.

No arrests have yet been made.
