Escalating tensions between senior management and the IFP political leadership are now threatening to bring the Newcastle Municipality to its knees.

The leadership of the IFP, which took over the council from the ANC in the November municipal elections, is pushing for the removal of the acting municipal manager (MM) Vish Govender after accusing him of purging IFP-aligned senior officials at the municipality.

On the other hand, Govender is accusing the IFP leadership of interfering in the administrative affairs of the municipality.
