With the recent arrests after the civil unrest, the Correctional Services Centres in KZN and Johannesburg are feeling the pinch of overcrowding.

Over 3 000 alleged looters have been arrested.

So far Westville prison in Durban has the highest number of remand detainees. This has raised concerns among the prisoners’ organisation — Justice for Prisoners and Detainees Trust for Human Rights. In Greytown alone, more than 50 people were arrested this week for contravening the alert level 4 regulations and theft.
