There were loud growls and sighs of dissatisfaction in the court gallery on Thursday as three men charged in connection with the violence in Phoenix were granted bail.

Seelan Chetty and Owen Chinnasamy were granted R10 000 bail each while Keilen Pillay was granted R5 000 bail at the Verulam Magistrate’s Court. They are charged with three counts of attempted murder and two counts of malicious damage to property.

The state is alleging that the three acted in common purpose when they stopped two vehicles in Phoenix, shot at the four occupants and set them alight during the unrest on July 12.
