Police are investigating defeating the ends of justice charges after pressure to withdraw charges was exerted on the victim in the assault case against Newcastle mayor, Ntuthuko Mahlaba and two co-accused.

The victim told Newcastle police that an individual (who is known to The Witness) had tricked him into going to the police station to withdrew the charges.

However, the charges were not withdrawn, and instead police opened a criminal case against the individual.
