One man died and seven people were injured when a taxi and a bakkie collided head-on on the R33, near New Hanover Road, on Saturday night.

Sources at the scene said there were two people in the taxi and six in the bakkie at the time of the crash.

Paramedics from Kwazulu Private Ambulance Service treated one critically injured passenger and six others, who were in a serious condition, at the scene.

They then transported the injured to hospitals in Pietermaritzburg for further treatment.

The SAPS are investigating cases of reckless and negligent driving and culpable homicide.
