A six-year-old girl who was raped on a farm outside Pietermaritzburg last week has been taken to a place of safety.
KZN police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said a case of rape was opened at Cramond SAPS and transferred to Pietermaritzburg Family Violence, Child Protection Unit.
She said a 47-year-old suspect has been arrested and appeared in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
The ANC Women’s League had called on police to speed up their investigation. Provincial secretary of the ANCWL Nonhlanhla Gabela said they are concerned about the safety of the victim and other children in the area, should the suspect be released on bail.
“We are saying the police must speed up their investigation in this matter and ensure that the suspect does not get bail. We are of the view that should the suspect be released on bail, the victim [and] other children who might have witnessed the incident will be targeted by the suspect,” she said.
