Suspects escape from Phoenix police station

Five detainees escaped from the Phoenix police station's holding cells on Saturday morning.

Four of them have been re-arrested by police while one is still on the loose.

“A case of escaping from lawful custody is being investigated by Phoenix SAPS. It is alleged that yesterday at 08:00, five awaiting trial prisoners escaped from lawful custody,” said Captain Nqobile Gwala, KZN provincial police spokesperson.

Umesh Singh, chairperson of the Phoenix Community Police Forum, said the grills of the cells were cut open and that’s how they managed to escape.

Police said the circumstances of the escape were still being investigated. Singh commended the police for managing to capture the most of the escapees.

“These guys were charged with petty crimes like robbery, theft, shop lifting and stuff like that, nothing too serious,” said Singh.
