A double tragedy has sent shock waves through the Zwelisha community at Bergville after a double drowning was reported on Sunday afternoon.
Mawande Zikode (11) and Nokuphila Zondo (14) had been swimming with a group of children, when Zikode started shouting for help.
Bergville police who were on scene said Nokuphila had rushed into the water to try and save the younger Mawande.
Members of the Zwelisha community gathered around the muddy banks of the Woodstock Dam to watch as Okhahlamba Municipal Search and Rescue with members of SAPS K9 Search and Rescue and divers from Pietermaritzburg started their search for the two.
The two police dogs pointed out an area in the water and divers started searching the dam. Chief of Okhahlamba Municipal Search and Rescue Freddie Halgreen told the Ladysmith Herald, that a few meters into the dam the water is shallow, but then there is a huge drop down and this is where the dogs indicated the two might still be.
Within a few minutes into the dive, divers had indicated the two girl's bodies were found. A case of culpable homicide is being investigated by the Bergville police. Family gathered and wept as they could not believe what had occurred. - Tabloid Newspapers
