Three children died at Springview in Ixopo on Monday afternoon when an old rondavel they were playing in caught on fire.
The mayor of uBuhlebezwe Municipality, Elizabeth Ngubo, said the three children were playing inside an old rondavel.
“Two of them were from the family where the rondavel burned, while the other one was from the neighbour’s,” said Ngubo.
She added that the children might have started the fire while playing. The old structure fell and caught alight.
The children were between the ages of three and four.
KwaZulu-Natal Social Development MEC Nonhlanhla Khoza, sent her condolences to the families following this incident. She said it was very painful to lose children in such a horrific manner while their parents still expected more from them.
“This is a very painful incident. We are shocked and pained by the death of children. We understand that police are investigating the cause of death and how the fire started while the children were playing in the old structure. However, it is also important for the parents to supervise minors when they are playing all the time,” said Khoza.
A team of social workers were sent to meet with families whose children died. The department will provide counselling to affected families in the area.
The mayor of the Harry Gwala District Municipality, Zamo Nxumalo, also sent his condolences.
