Three people have been killed in a taxi crash along the Helpmekaar Road, just past the Umloyomayo turn off in Ladysmith on Friday.

Emergency services said 14 other people suffered serious to minor injuries and were stabilised by paramedics from Ladysmith ER24, Sharaj EMS and Innovamed Private Ambulance.

The injured people were rushed to the Ladysmith hospital.

Ladysmith Herald was told that the taxi had been travelling along Helpmekaar Road towards Ezakheni when it had a burst tyre.

The driver allegedly lost control of the taxi which rolled a few times, before coming to an abrupt stop. Eyewitnesses said the passengers were flung out of the taxi.

A case of culpable homicide is being investigated by the Ezakheni police. The dead have not been officially identified at this time.
