The uMngeni Municipality has opted to write to national government asking for the area to be declared a local disaster.
This comes after areas within the municipality were hit by a massive freak storm on December 30. uMngeni Municipality Mayor Chris Pappas said the days that have followed have seen heavy downpours, hail and strong winds.
Pappas said the municipality’s infrastructure has been severely damaged, and in some cases, has totally collapsed. He added that a number of communities have been negatively affected, with some individuals having lost their homes and belongings.
