People who have been digging in KwaHlathi, outside Ladysmith, for what they had hoped were diamonds were dealt a blow when the authorities confirmed they were just quartz crystals.

Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs MEC Ravi Pillay announced on Sunday that the stones found in the area were not diamonds but quartz crystals, which were much cheaper in value.

Pillay along with Geoscience head, Mosa Mabuza, gave a preliminary report on their findings.
