The South African Weather Service (Saws) has warned of more rainfall expected in KwaZulu-Natal.

The weather service said more than 30mm of rainfall was received mainly along the KZN coast from Thursday and the downpours continue on Friday. Saws said this continuous rainfall is expected throughout the day in the province, more significantly along the south coast.

Saws said this rainfall could result in disruptive rain leading to localised flooding of formal and informal settlement, infrastructure damage as well as disruptions to main roads on Friday.

The areas expected to be affected are eThekwini, KwaDukuza, Mandeni, Ndwedwe and uMlalazi.

People are urged to stay indoors and off the roads and to avoid crossing rivers and swollen streams where water is above your ankles.

“If trapped in a vehicle during a flood, abandon it and climb to higher ground. In buildings, move valuables to a safe place above the expected flood level. Switch off electricity at the supply point to the building. In rural areas protect or relocate animals to a safe place on higher ground. Take caution when traveling or avoid traveling as roads may be flooded, with potholes being filled with water and there may be sinkholes,” said Saws.
