The South African Weather Service (Saws) has warned of severe thunderstorms expected over KwaZulu-Natal on Friday afternoon.

The weather service said it expects surface trough over central interior of South Africa together with upper air trough sending perturbation over KZN.

This is expected to cause unstable conditions which will result in convective development over KZN with thunderstorm activities expected, and some of the thunderstorms may become severe.

Saws said there is a high likelihood of localised flooding of susceptible roads and low-lying areas, large amount of small hail, winds causing localised damage to settlements and falling of trees.

Areas expected to be affected include Alfred Duma - Ladysmith, Dr N. Dlamini-Zuma - Underberg, Greater Kokstad, Impendle, Ingwe, Inkosi Langalibalele - Estcourt, Inkosi Langalibalele - Sobabili, Mpofana - Giants Castle, Mpofana - Mooi River, Okhahlamba, uMngeni and Umzimkhulu.

Residents are urged to stay indoors, if outdoors seek shelter immediately but not under trees, telephone or power lines.
