Young man drowns at St Lucia beach in KwaZulu-Natal

A young man drowned at Jabula Beach in St Lucia in the iSimangaliso Wetland Park on Sunday.

Isimangaliso said in a statement that according to the preliminary report received, a male estimated to be between 19-21 years was swimming with his friends when he drowned and disappeared around 3.30 pm.

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) was called to the scene to search for the person and could not recover the body at the time, and the search resumed from the early hours today (Monday) in an attempt to recover the body.

The incident has been reported to the South African Police Services and an inquest docket has been opened.

iSimangaliso Wetland Park which stretches from Maphelane, South of St Lucia up to Kosi Bay on the Mozambican boarder has 220km of coastline with various areas demarcated for swimming.

Isimangaliso said since June 2020 to date, four (4) incidents of drowning have been reported in the Park. “As the festive season approaches, revellers are requested to exercise caution especially during adverse weather conditions.

iSimangaliso Wetland Park Authority would like to express its condolences to the bereaved family.”
