Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande has warned of a spike in the number of fake colleges offering so-called honours and doctorate degrees.
Nzimande said he is concerned about increasing cases of bogus institutions awarding honorary doctorates, mostly to celebrities.
This comes after businesswoman and reality TV personality Shauwn ‘Mamkhize’ Mkhize was given a doctorate in philosophy by the Good Shepherd College of Religion, Culture and Training, which the department said is unregistered.
Department’s spokesperson Ishmael Mnisi said an investigation would be launched into these illegal operations.
“Kindly note that the Good Shepherd College of Religion and Training is not registered with the Department as a private higher education institution. We are currently investigating,” said Mnisi.
The institution does not have a website or education domain.
Ahead of the new academic year, the Higher Education department urged the public to first check an institute's registration qualifications on the department’s website before applying or paying any fees.
She already asked that she be addressed as Dr Mkhize and changed her Instagram name to Dr Shauwn Mkhize. But it turns out the college that awarded her the honorary degree is not registered and the dhet and training is investigating the matterhttps://t.co/yp7wlxpFXw— Veve (@LudidiVelani) December 2, 2021
