The Msunduzi municipal council has agreed to bankroll Maritzburg United FC for the next three years.

On Wednesday council voted to sponsor the team with R9 million for the next three years despite warnings from opposition parties that the City could not afford this expenditure.

Maritzburg United’s proposal was debated extensively at Wednesday’s council meeting before it was put to the vote. Eleven councillors voted against supporting the club, 37 voted in support, while three abstained.
