Police and traffic officers kept guard in large numbers on Wednesday after the Pietermaritzburg and Howick taxi associations came to a tense standoff over route issues.

This as police appealed to the associations to find a peaceful solution to their quarrels.

Barricading the entrance to and out of the Masukwane Taxi Rank near the N3, Howick taxi drivers caused major traffic delays on Chota Motala Road outside the rank in the afternoon.
