Residents protest on East Street over electricity outages.
Residents protest on East Street over electricity outages.

Residents’ anger over ongoing power outages spilled onto the streets on Wednesday with protests in the Pietermaritzburg CBD and Sweetwaters.

Around 300 residents living at the Jika Joe informal settlement and those from the men’s hostel began setting tyres and other debris alight at the intersection of East and Berg streets on Tuesday evening.

They also set up barricades of burning tyres and logs, blocking access to East and Church streets.
