Pensioner gets 25 years in prison for drunken killing spree

A 73-year-old pensioner, Themba Mkhize, has been jailed effectively for 25 years for murdering his girlfriend and her two grandchildren, aged four and seven years.

The sentence was imposed on Mkhize by Judge Piet Bezuidenhout in terms of a plea and sentence agreement in the Pietermaritzburg High Court last week.

According to the court papers, Mkhize of Hopewell area in Thornville had entered into a relationship with his girlfriend, Khanyisile Sibiya during November 2020 after the couple were introduced by Mkhize’s sister.
